It’s almost 2011 – are you ready to “start anew,” as they say? In full disclosure, I’ll admit that I’m not much for New Year’s Resolutions; why wait until January 1 to lose the weight, read more books, or start flossing? The same goes for volunteering. A few weeks ago I talked about retaining your holiday volunteers. Well, here’s another opportunity! Although there are curmudgeons like me who don’t make resolutions on January 1, there are many wonderful people who do. So here’s my challenge to you: get them to resolve to volunteer. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
- Ask friends and family to set a goal of hours to serve this year. Have them pledge or make it a competition – whatever works best for your friends and family.
- Ask your employer if you can volunteer 1-4 hours a week on work time.
- Mark national days of service on your calendar the same way you mark birthdays and holidays. Then find opportunities for each of those days!
- Volunteer to participate in walks and runs. (Pair this with a resolution to exercise more and you have a double win!)
What do you think? Can we make volunteering the new resolution?
