The past few weeks have brought a whirlwind of activity. For those of you who don’t know, Volunteer Maryland is a State AmeriCorps program supported by the Governor’s Office of Service and Volunteerism (fondly called GOSV). Each year, the GOSV sponsors a volunteer management conference for nonprofit leaders and hosts the Governor’s Service Awards Ceremony. This year, Volunteer Maryland will be once again, stepping into the mix by hosting our second Destination AmeriCorps event on the same day! What is Destination AmeriCorps, you ask. I will gladly tell you!
Destination AmeriCorps (#DestinationAC) is a free (let me repeat FREE) networking event for all AmeriCorps members serving in the state of Maryland. Last year, the focus of the event was networking and making connections. The event will be held at the Greenbelt Marriott immediately following the GOSV’s volunteer management conference, beginning at 3:00 PM and going until 6:00 PM on Thursday, May 12.
This year, we are building on that theme to connect members with resources and networking opportunities all while giving them the opportunity to share their stories, celebrate their service, and to learn from AmeriCorps alumni about how service has impacted their career paths. Oh yes, ladies and gentlemen! We are doing it big this year complete with a re-creation of Emerald City from the Wizard of Oz!
The evening will kick off with attendees participating in a service project. This will be followed by a panel of AmeriCorps program alums speaking about how their service impacted their career paths. Next will be a rousing networking session that will feature AmeriCorps members telling their story of service followed by two concurrent workshops on resources to use during the AmeriCorps year and resources for life after AmeriCorps. The evening will end in fun, games, and prizes.
The purpose of this event is to give AmeriCorps members a chance to connect with other members from all over Maryland, to give members an opportunity to reflect on their service, to share resources to make their service year easier, and to learn about their options after AmeriCorps.
This is where YOU come in. Do you know an AmeriCorps member in Maryland, Washington D.C., Delaware, or Virginia? Are YOU an AmeriCorps member in any of these states? Are you looking to meet and connect with other AmeriCorps members in the area? Do you want to share resources with other members who may have expertise in certain fields? Come to Destination AmeriCorps!
Are you a leader within an organization looking to better manage your volunteer base? Do you struggle with recruiting volunteers? Do you struggle keeping your volunteers around? Come to “Service Shines Through”, a FREE volunteer management conference for nonprofit leaders sponsored by the Governor’s Office of Service and Volunteerism!
Spread the word! Volunteer Maryland and the Governor’s Office of Service and Volunteerism have resources for YOU, whether you are a volunteer manager or an AmeriCorps member! For details about Destination AmeriCorps, click here!
