On Wednesday, Corrine gave you a pretty good idea what half of my day-to-day life looks like. The other half, beyond my typical Regional Coordinator duties of supporting my region, is spent preparing for Destination AmeriCorps, which is just shy of two weeks away! Eek!
This year’s event looks a little different from last year, and I’m pretty excited about it. We’re starting our evening off with a service project and free flowing networking time from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm to allow registrants to drift in at the best time for them. We really get going at 4:00 pm with a panel of AmeriCorps alumni who will share their stories of service, what they’re doing today, and any advice they have for the current AmeriCorps members in attendance. After that, we’ll move into some more networking activities and close the evening out with games and prizes. I would go into more detail, but I want there to be some anticipation as the day draws ever closer.
Although Corrine and I are hard at work to get this event together, it really wouldn’t be possible without the help of our committee members. We have eleven current Volunteer Maryland VISTAs and VMCs helping us put the event together, and they have been amazing. From cold calling businesses to request donations, to contacting AmeriCorps programs to invite attendees, to staying late at VM headquarters to make beautiful decorations for the tables and walls, they are doing it all (on top of continuing to work hard at their Service Sites)!
So, I want to say thank you to our committee members for your continuing dedication to making this a great event. And I want to invite any and all current AmeriCorps members serving in Maryland (and DC, and Delaware, if you want to make the drive) to join us for Destination AmeriCorps on Thursday, May 12, 2011 from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Greenbelt Marriott.
