Sumiko Chambers grew up surrounded by teachers and activists who believed in service for positive change and often took part in community service projects. “I was originally open to the idea of an AmeriCorps service year because of my family’s informal tradition of service,” Sumiko said concerning her reason for doing a term of service. Sumiko is the Volunteer Maryland Coordinator at Asian American LEAD in Wheaton, MD. Sumiko will recruit and manage students from area universities (Georgetown, American, George Washington, and University of Maryland at College Park) to serve as teaching aides in the after school programs. She will also develop systems to better utilize high school-aged volunteers. Sumiko plans on attending graduate school next fall to earn a Masters in International Policy.
