2012 is here! No more waiting anxiously for the holidays to be over or denying that 2011 is coming to a close. A new year is here people, let’s embrace it. For Volunteer Maryland, the new year means that we are almost half way through the service year (say what?!?!). The Peer Leaders (Barb and I) and the Volunteer Maryland Coordinators (VMCs) are quickly approaching the mid-year point of our AmeriCorps year without any intentions of slowing down.
So what does the new year look like for us? I’m glad you asked. For the Peer Leaders, our daily support to the VMCs and Volunteer Maryland continues while we prepare for Destination AmeriCorps 2012. Have you heard of it? This event was created in 2010 as a celebration of AmeriCorps members across the state of Maryland and is useful for networking, outreach for Maryland programs, and a great time…AmeriStyle! Keeping with the tradition, May will be the month for this year’s Destination AmeriCorps, so be on the lookout for a definitive date and time!
For the VMCs, this is the time of year when many of them are immersed in their service sites. Each of them has their respective volunteer program by the reigns and is steering it to a successful destination. Unlike the U.S. Triple Crown, the VMCs are not competing against each other for the most recruited volunteers, or “best volunteer program in Maryland.” Instead, they are guiding the service sites in creating effective and manageable programs of service. Like Thoroughbreds, volunteer programs must be bred for what ever tasks they will be utilized for. The VMCs have been busy with seeing what their volunteer programs are about and are now blazing ahead to make it suitable for the communities they serve. We haven’t made it to the midpoint of the AmeriDerby, but we are well on our way!
