As part of our celebration of AmeriCorps Week, we’re highlighting how AmeriCorps worked for VM alumni. This is just one of many success stories!
Chelsea Henkel was a first-generation college graduate and alumnae of Hood College when she became a Volunteer Maryland Coordinator in Class 20. Over her two years of service with the Literacy Council of Frederick County, Chelsea recruited 217 volunteers to provide one-on-one basic reading and writing instruction and conversation skills to non-literate, semi-literate, or non-English speaking adults. With a liberal arts degree and solid experience engaging volunteers and helping adults improve their language skills, Chelsea was ready to commit herself to the field of education and, for the last two years, Chelsea has been the Director of the English Language Acquisition Program in Denver, Colorado.
