Rebecca (Becca) Larew moved to the Washington, DC area this past summer to do an internship and fell in love with the DC-Maryland area. An Iowa native, Becca recently graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Social Work and wasn’t quite ready to head off to graduate school; “I knew I wanted to get more experience working before committing to two more years of school. I found Volunteer Maryland and was immediately drawn to the idea of coordinating volunteers and having a more administrative role in a nonprofit,” Becca said. This year she will serve with Crittenton Services, a positive youth development organization with a singular focus–strengthening the ability of teen women to identify, embrace, and achieve their academic, career, and life goals. Becca will recruit and coordinate volunteers who will serve in programs that help teen girls recognize and value their gifts and develop invaluable life and leadership skills. Volunteer Maryland fits into many professional and personal goals for Becca; she hopes it will help in her pursuit of a placement with Peace Corps and her ultimate career in social work.
