Katie Mettle, Patuxent Riverkeeper

Katie Mettle attended the University of Maryland Baltimore County on a full scholarship. While there, she was the Vice Delegate Chairperson of the UMBC delegation to Maryland Student Legislature, a statewide organization through which undergraduate and graduate students simulate the Maryland General Assembly.

Katie also served as a member of Maryland’s Juvenile Justice and Grant Planning Review Council, where among her many responsibilities were after-school supervision and homework help for at-risk youth. Having grown up in a rural environment, Katie is now very excited to switch her focus to environmental concerns.

Katie chose to serve with Volunteer Maryland after hearing AmeriCorps alums speak enthusiastically about their experiences. Katie is interested in learning how to organize, recruit, and manage groups of people to achieve a common goal that serves the greater good. Serving with Patuxent Riverkeeper is a great fit for her because she gravitates towards environmental issues, especially ones concerning oceans, watersheds, biodiversity, pollution, and climate change. Katie’s long-term interests include going to graduate school to study Environmental Science and Policy with a concentration in marine science. For now, she is very excited to serve as a Volunteer Maryland Coordinator looks forward to seeing where that leads her.
