Valerie brings much professional experience to her Volunteer Maryland Coordinator position, having served as Executive Director of four non-profit organizations, among them the International Book Bank in Baltimore, and Pittsburgh Cares, an affiliate of the national community service organization, Hands On Network. She has also served on the Boards of Directors of several organizations and currently is a member of Books for Africa’s Ambassadors Circle. Valerie was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Morocco and a Peace Corps Country Director in three West African posts. She holds a PhD in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh. Valerie is passionate about the environment and recently received the Certified Wildlife Habitat designation from the National Wildlife Federation, after wildscaping her downtown backyard with native perennials to attract birds and butterflies. She’s a proud Big Sister of 16 years to the same child (now an adult), and also volunteers at BARCS, an animal shelter in South Baltimore. She believes that she benefits as much as, if not more than, the people and organizations she is serving, in every volunteer situation of her life.
When Valerie looked at AmeriCorps opportunities in Baltimore City, her first choice was the Volunteer Maryland Coordinator position. She loves volunteering and has enjoyed past opportunities to develop and run volunteer programs, all of which makes Valerie a great fit for Charm City Clinic.
Service itself is Valerie’s goal. She is honored to serve with AmeriCorps and to give back in her home community, after nearly four decades of work in education and non-profit service in the U.S. and overseas.
