“I am serving my second year as an AmeriCorps member with Volunteer Maryland at Deep Roots, Inc. in Earleville, Maryland. Deep Roots is a homeless shelter that provides transitional housing and other services and resources to families with children who are experiencing homelessness and poverty. Our mission is to ‘End homelessness one child at a time’.
I hadn’t had the opportunity to serve in my own community.
I had originally accepted a position with Volunteer Maryland because I have had the opportunity to participate in service work across the globe from Honduras, to Peru, to South Africa—but I hadn’t had the opportunity to serve in my own community. I wanted to take time to both make an impact and learn about the issues plaguing those in the region in which I grew up.
During my first service year, I was able to make such significant impacts within my organizations volunteer program. Overall, I was able to create a firm base for the volunteer program, both with volunteers and policies and procedures, as well as with starting our Tutoring and Mentoring program, and hosting our second annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony. I had also gotten the opportunity to meet some of the most amazing people, both within AmeriCorps and the clients of Deep Roots.
This year, I hope to continue to grow both professionally and personally, and I am excited to see the progress that will come from this second year with Volunteer Maryland and Deep Roots.”
